European College of Equine Internal Medicine

ECEIM Residency Position, University of Liège, Belgium

The Equine Clinical Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Liège, is opening a full-time assistant position for one year, renewable. If the candidate meets the requirements, he/she could enter a standard residency program approved by the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM) during or at the end of the year. In this case, the contract will cover, at least, the entire residency period.

The candidates must hold a degree in veterinary medicine, have distinguished themselves during their studies, be eligible to practice veterinary medicine in Europe, and have completed a 12-month internship or have equivalent experience (i.e., at least 2 years of experience in equine or mixed private practice). They must have a good knowledge of French and English. A basic knowledge of Dutch and/or German, solid clinical experience, and/or teaching experience will be considered additional advantages. Organizational skills, good oral and written communication abilities, and a strong interest in teamwork and knowledge transfer to students are essential.

The candidate will join a dynamic team and will be supervised mainly by ECEIM/ACVIM diplomates and secondarily by ECVAA/ECVO/ECVDI/ECAR/ECVS diplomates, allowing them to acquire specialized training in internal medicine. The candidate's role will be to handle consultations and emergency admissions as well as care for hospitalized patients in the internal medicine service under the supervision of the responsible parties. They will also be required to provide clinical teaching to veterinary master students and interns, participate to the equine clinic on-call service, and engage in research projects.

The equine internal medicine service at the University of Liège has a caseload of approximately 600 cases per year (about 60% of which are emergencies), including sport and leisure horses coming from Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, and France. The internal medicine case load includes a wide range of medical disorders, representing all categories required by the ECEIM, mainly digestive, respiratory, and neonatal cases, but also renal, neuromuscular, sports medicine, and cardiology cases. The clinic includes an intensive care unit for adult horses and foals with significant activity, and a large number of ophthalmology cases.
