European College of Equine Internal Medicine

Organizing committee

The local organization of the 11th ECEIM congress will be carried out by clinical team members from the Department of Large Animal Internal Medicine, chaired by Prof. Dr. Gunther van Loon.

This department is a clinical unit within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine that serves as a veterinary teaching hospital and a referral centre for large domestic animals, covering all aspects of internal medicine. The main service to the public is providing high quality care to horses, cattle and small ruminants. For this purpose the clinic has state-of-the-art hospitalization facilities and specialized equipment. Additionally, the department provides expert advice and services to the general public, to veterinarians and to national and international organizations. With over 5000 cases per year in the equine clinic, and 1800 yearly for Equine Internal Medicine, Ghent University is probably one of the biggest equine clinics in Europe.

Major research areas within the department are equine cardiology and neurology. Cardiac research includes pathophysiology and treatment of arrhythmias (e.g. pacemaker implantation, electrical cardioversion, interventional cardiology, electrophysiological studies), advanced echocardiographic techniques (tissue Doppler, speckle tracking) and the use of biomarkers in cardiovascular disease. Research in neurology focuses on the clinical diagnosis of central and peripheral neurologic diseases.

Furthermore the department is an important teaching unit, providing theoretical and practical training for students, PhD students, residents and veterinarians.
